Wendy joined Rodeph Sholom School in 2016, marking the beginning of her education career. She holds a B.A. in Sociology from SUNY Binghamton and an M.S.W. from SUNY Albany. What she treasures most about Rodeph Sholom School is the daily opportunity to learn alongside teaching, gaining insights from students, faculty, and staff alike. An animal lover with a special fondness for dogs, she previously fostered dogs until they found their forever homes.

Ryan Allais
Director of Summer Camp and After School Programs
Ryan transitioned into the Director of Summer Camp and After School Programs in 2022 after serving as an Early Childhood Division teacher at Rodeph Sholom School. He quickly became an indispensable member of the community through his natural ability to connect with children and his talent for helping everyone navigate technology. A trained opera singer, Ryan holds master’s degrees in music education and nonprofit management.
Evan Allred
Middle School Physical Education Teacher
Evan graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Sports Administration and a minor in history. He spent 10 summers at Brant Lake Camp in the Adirondacks, where he was responsible for children of all ages, both as a counselor and a coach of multiple sports. During that time, he was also a restaurant manager. After moving to New York, he worked as a substitute teacher and coach at The Dalton School and as an instructor for Dribbl Basketball before joining Rodeph Sholom School. Evan is originally from Lexington, NC.
Katie Appel
Elementary Head Teacher
Katie was a substitute teacher at Rodeph Sholom School for several years, and before that, was a substitute at numerous independent schools in Virginia and New York before joining the team full-time in 2017. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance with a minor in education from UC-Irvine and a master’s degree in education.

Elementary Head Teacher
Kaitlyn joined Rodeph Sholom School in 2022. She is a University at Buffalo graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and previously served as a Summer Camp counselor at the school, leading Pre-K students. Kaitlyn has always enjoyed working with children, particularly in the dance studio, where she taught tap, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary dance. She has also performed in the DUMBO Dance Festival and Boston Contemporary Dance Festival.
Sarah Bank ’14
Early Childhood Associate Teacher
Sarah first joined Rodeph Sholom School as a teacher in 2023, returning to the institution from where she graduated and was a student from ages two through fourteen. After attending Riverdale Country School for high school, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from Wesleyan University, where she minored in history and helped run the college radio station. An accomplished writer, she spent time teaching and traveling to Spain before returning to Rodeph Sholom School in 2025 and pursuing her Master of Fine Arts in Writing at Columbia University. What she loves most about working with young children is their unique and inventive ways of viewing the world, which teach her something new each day.
Janet Barzilay
Director of Enrollment
Janet began her career in education in 2004 and joined Rodeph Sholom School as the Director of Enrollment in 2022. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Brown University and a J.D. from NYU School of Law. Janet brings extensive experience in enrollment and admissions management, having previously served as Director of Outreach and Enrollment Management at Cathedral School and Director of Admissions and Placement at the Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan. Her background also includes roles as Director of Admissions at the Academy for Jewish Religion in Los Angeles, admissions team member at NYU Wagner School of Public Service, and Director of Development at Carlthorp School in Los Angeles. Before transitioning to education, Janet began her career as a corporate attorney, working for two law firms in New York and providing pro bono legal services for Bet Tzedek in Los Angeles. What she treasures most about Rodeph Sholom School is its commitment to superb academics and joy in learning, combined with its focus on developing socially responsible and moral citizens of the world. Though she and her husband raised their daughters in Los Angeles, they have maintained a deep connection to the Rodeph Sholom community.
Rachel Beaton
Elementary Head Teacher
Rachel joined Rodeph Sholom School in 2007, marking the beginning of her career in education. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and American Studies from Cornell University, a Master of Arts in elementary and gifted education from Teachers College at Columbia University, and a Master of Arts in special education from Fordham University. What she treasures most about Rodeph Sholom School is the particularly special families in the community—she loves seeing familiar faces at events and teaching students who are siblings of other children she has known. In her free time, she enjoys reading fiction with strong plots, napping on gray days under lots of blankets, and gardening, with pruning being her favorite gardening activity.

Emily joined Rodeph Sholom School in 2023, beginning her education career the same year. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a Michigan State Teaching Certification from the University of Michigan. What she appreciates most about Rodeph Sholom School is the emphasis on involving parents and guardians in school activities and events. Since moving to New York City, her favorite hobbies are trying new foods, running, and spending time outside with friends.
