Rodeph Sholom School Teacher Wins Multiple Awards for Children's Album

Rodeph Sholom School is proud to announce that Breathe In: Children’s Songs for Mindfulness and Awareness recently won two awards: a National Parenting Publications Bronze Award (NAPPA), and a Parent’s Choice Recommended Award. 
RSS teacher Lianne Bassin produced the album with an inaugural grant from the Paul Druzinsky Teacher Enrichment Fund in 2014. The Fund was established to honor Druzinsky’s tenure as Head of School, and highlight his commitment to our outstanding faculty by providing one-of-a-kind transformative professional development experiences.

Touted by NAPPA for “...[helping] young listeners build confidence and [giving] them strategies to handle big emotions,” Ms. Bassin’s album also teaches children about conflict resolution and mindful living. The album includes a booklet with learning objectives, and follow-up activities to identify mindful moments with age-appropriate questions.

“The lyrics inspire children to become more aware of themselves, others, and the world around them. With unique catchy tunes and lovely vocals, Breathe In provides children with positivity and meaningful messages,” NAPPA said in its award review. Parent’s Choice Foundation highlighted that the album “cultivates awareness and appreciation of self and others.”

NAPPA is one of the longest running and most respected awards programs for children’s products and parenting resources in the country. Parent’s Choice Foundation, a go-to source for parent recommendations, was established in 1978 and is the nation’s oldest nonprofit guide to quality children’s media and toys.

Ms. Bassin holds a BA in Psychology and Studio Art from Binghamton University, and an MA in Early Childhood Education from Hunter College. She began her tenure at RSS in 2011. An avid songwriter and music lover, Ms. Bassin has become fascinated with the power of song to captivate children in a classroom environment.

“I have been writing children’s songs with the intention of helping children cultivate inner awareness and internalize certain values,” she said. “​I am constantly editing and refining my songs and arrangements because I want my final product to be the best it can be. Pushing my creative limits has forced me to think about how to best communicate the idea of ‘mindfulness’ to children.”
