The goal of the Rodeph Sholom chess program is to foster the students’ enjoyment of chess while teaching sportsmanship, strategic thinking, and patience. RSS offers after school chess starting in Pre-K through 4th Grade. Participation in the programs is strong with several students across the grade levels. In addition, RSS offers a separate weekly team practice session as an “After School” activity for more dedicated players in 1st - 8th Grades.

RSS hosts a tournament each semester for students, many of whom experience competition for the first time in a supportive, friendly environment. The fall 2018 RSS tournament was attended by more than 40 children in Pre-K through 4th Grade, and the spring tournament also includes middle schoolers. Players at RSS compete in local, state, and national tournaments on a regular basis, building camaraderie across grades and exhibiting strong school spirit. We celebrate the successes of all of our players - from our beginners who brave their first rated tournament to our advanced players who are finishing in the top ten for their age group at the National Scholastic Chess Championship.
