A Plan for Leadership Continuity

Rodeph Sholom School is proud to announce the appointment of Danny Karpf as its next Head of School, beginning in July 2017.
Rodeph Sholom School is proud to announce that Danny Karpf will be joining RSS as Associate Head of School for 2016-2017. Mr. Karpf comes from an impressive background - he is currently the Assistant to the Head of School for Strategic Initiatives at Gordon School, a highly regarded and nationally recognized N-8 independent school in Providence, RI. He also served with distinction for nine years as Gordon’s Middle School Director, and received his B.A. from Haverford College and M.S. from Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Karpf is a seasoned educator with over twenty years of elementary and middle school teaching and leadership experience, and we are excited to welcome him and his family to the RSS community.

“I am thrilled to be joining RSS next year,” Mr. Karpf said. “As I learned about the school over the past few months, it became clear to me that RSS will be an incredible community for my family and me to be a part of for years to come. I am deeply appreciative of and humbled by the Board's confidence in my readiness to lead RSS into the future, and I can’t wait to get to know each of you.”

Nationally, independent schools are turning to out of the box, non-traditional leadership transition plans.  As part of a more comprehensive strategic planning process, the RSS Board of Trustees decided to identify a smart, engaging and passionate N-8 independent school educator as Associate Head of School, to train under Dr. Katz and transition into Head of School once Dr. Katz's term is complete. Mr. Karpf will serve under the Dr. Katz for the 2016-2017 school year, gaining invaluable insight into the RSS community before taking on the role of Head of School when Dr. Katz retires in 2017.

“Through a series of visits over the past several months, Danny won unanimous praise from RSS trustees and members of the school administration who had the opportunity to interview him as someone whose knowledge, energy, values, and skills are a great fit for RSS,” said RSS Chair of the Board of Trustees, Michael Silverman.

This hands-on leadership model magnifies the impact these two talented individuals will have on our school through a deftly skilled Head of School who helped bring RSS into a new phase of growth, as well as an eager and accomplished Associate Head of School who will continue to bring these plans into the future, well into 2017 and beyond.

“The RSS Board has identified an outstanding candidate in Danny Karpf,” current Head of School Jerry Katz said, “In a relatively short time, I have come to love this school, and it is a privilege to be associated with all of you.  I have almost half of my tenure here still in front of me, and there is much for us to do together over the next twenty-one months to ensure the strength of RSS for many years to come.”

Mr. Karpf and his wife Lisa are excited to enter the RSS admissions process for their sons Leo (Grade 2) and Toby (Pre-K) and look forward to the opportunity of becoming immersed in the Rodeph Sholom School community.
